What is trompe l'oeil art?

Trompe l'oeil is a French phrase that translates to "trick the eye." This type of art is usually murals or paintings that create an optical illusion. Today it's used as part of interior decorating in homes and inside buildings. It creates great amusement outside on the sides of buildings or on streets.

Trompe l'oeil was originally used by Greeks and Romans going back to 400 B.C. If you ever make it out to see Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel - this is used throughout the Vatican. Today it is used in any type of art that uses perspective with realistic images to make the image appear 3-dimensional with false depth.

This is one of my favorite styles of art, and I believe is a true reflection of artistic talent and thinking. I will add more links as I find them.
