Graphic Designer Turned Copywriter?

Most designers become brilliant artists through their self motivation and determination for keeping on top of their game. But what a lot of designers don't know, is that when they expand their skill set to copywriting, they've really stepped up their game.

Copywriting is not for everyone, and it's a rare commodity to find someone who can do both design and writing very well. Some of you may think you're already great writers, perfect. But copywriting for the public takes a great deal of intuition, psychology, preparation, and quite frankly a skill that's developed with lots and lots and lots of practice.

WHAT DO DESIGNERS AND COPYWRITERS HAVE IN COMMON?
Simply put, they both are in the business to sell. Whether you're designing to attract an eye or evoke an emotion, copywriters do the same, just through a different medium -- type.

DO I HAVE TO BE A COPYWRITER TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL GRAPHIC DESIGN CAREER?
No, especially if you're working in house at a design agency or studio. But, when you're talking about an in-house design time (not at a creative agency, but at a business) or when you're considering/doing freelance, having the writing skill will definitely impress your customers, not to mention it will create more opportunity for you. Clients will appreciate your skill set, because it's easier for one person to be outsourced than two; knowing that, clients will be inclined to come to you for more business.

As a graphic design professional myself, pretty much the only time I HAVEN'T done copywriting is when I design logos. My formal training is in advertising/public relations and corporate communications (I'm a self-taught designer.). These courses along with several journalism courses have really prepared me for my career as a creative professional.

If that's something you haven't thought of, or think you would like to learn more about, contact you local college for journalism classes. Journalism classes prepare you, in most cases, to write like a traditional newspaper journalist using Associated Press Style. Many organizations such as the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and many others provide great support for copywriters.

Online webinars, or day seminars are easily available and include common topics like: business writing, writing for the web, fine-tune your editing skills, writing newsletters, conversational writing, and many others targeting your interest. If you work with copywriters, start watching their processes and challenge yourself in your own time, to 'take on the project' that they're working and get that practical practice and speed.

I highly encourage seasoned graphic designers to consider continuing your education by taking journalism classes. If you're an experienced designer, I'm sure you've been presented on many occasions to write.

Best of luck designers and copywriters. Comment if you'd like more information or need help.
